The Southern California FUN Gardening Club or SOCALFUNG Club

‘One that doesn't focus on roses or orchids or anything too scientific.’

We did it the 1st meeting of the SOCAL Fun Gardening Club was held at my home in Yorba Linda on October 18th; it was a pretty warm day upper 80’s lower 90’s. I was thankful we started as early as we did. We had a fairly small group five members Antoinette (Gourd), Mike, Hector (Skrip), Nina and myself Mary (Stella Blue). Entertaining themselves inside were Mike’s wife Bev and Antoinette’s husband Willie and my partner John.

We had a short discussion of what actives we would like to see our club do this fall and winter I think most were agreeable to meet at plant sales and arboretums.

Hector brought with him our club’s logo designs 3 total. Your can see them at the message board. Thank you so much Hector for all you work!

We also confirmed that we would meet on Saturday November 15, 2003 at Las Pilitas Nursery at 11:00 am for a picnic lunch and Nursery Tour. I hope we will see a lot of members there. I would recommend checking out their website www.laspilitas.com a head of time for any plant you may be interested in purchasing or getting more information on. We will have someone from the nursery there to answer our questions.

If you plan on attending please R.S.V.P. at our message board or at GardenWeb at the Get - Together – Forum. Las Pilitas Nursery is located on a 21-acre native setting at 8331 Nelson Way (30-60 seconds off of I-15, just 100 ft. off of Old Highway 395; look right) in Escondido, CA, 92026. Phone 760-749-5930. The nursery is open to retail and wholesale customers 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Saturday.

Antoinette was kind enough to bring Chile for us for lunch, after the meeting some of you headed over to the Fullerton Arboretums Fall Plant Sale and Fair.

Before I go any further I hope everyone has survived the last firestorms that went through SO CA.

Remember to always log in at the message board that is the only way you can check out our on-line calendar at the top of the page there is all kind of stuff taking place at many of our local gardens and arboretums.

After recently becoming a member and making my first visit to The Living Desert in Palm Springs I can highly recommend that you check out the Fall Plant sale taking place on Saturday and Sunday November 15 -16, 2003 if you live near there. I came home with 3 new plants and a bunch of seeds. We should really plan on our club making a visit this winter or spring it is an awesome botanical garden and zoo fun for the whole family http://www.livingdesert.org

Since our meeting Norco_Bill has made the following announcement.

Due to football games and Thanksgiving weekend, I would like to host the next plant exchange on Saturday December 6 from 12:00-2:30 pm in Norco. We will continue in our usual practice of arriving between 11:00 and 12:00....sharing lunch and conversation and exchange plants at 12:30. I will supply the hotdogs and buns.

Here's directions to my house. If you are coming from Orange County area. Take the 91 into Corona. Get off at the Lincoln exit. Take Lincoln north to River Road. Turn left on River Road (west). Stay on River Road and when you cross Corydon, there will be a big open field on the left hand side of the road. We are the first house on the left hand side (2651 River Road).

It has a semi circle driveway, and you should see the cannas growing above the bricks and fence (unless the Santa Anna winds get them). My telephone number is 909-734-2875. I'm looking forward to seeing you all there. I don't know how great the yard will look, but this is a wonderful time of year to transplant!

If you are coming up or down the 15, take the second street exit west (south) to River Road. Turn right (west) and stay on River Road, just past Corydon Road. Our house is the first one on the left, past the open field.
