San Diego County Edition
September 2003
Volume 1,
Number 1
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the newsletter
for San Diego County. We have a few members in the San Diego area, and I
expect as time goes on we'll have a few more.
Autumn has
officially arrived on the calendar, which means our traditional fall planting
period is under way. This is the time of year when you can install an
entire landscape. Even though you won't see much happening above
ground, root growth will continue in the warm soil for months, getting ready
for a spectacular spring and summer. Nurseries, knowing this, are fully
stocked, and it's a wonderful time to visit them to see what's new.
Most
nurseries have web sites, making it easy to "know before you go" if
they will have what you are looking for. For instance, a quick check of
Walter Andersen's website mentions the Halloween section in their Poway store,
special plumerias, and suggestions for fall color. Armstrong Garden
Center's website highlights the Fall Festival of Roses and Garden Fair coming
September 27 at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad. The Mission Hills Nursery
website is featuring a preview of rose selections, and notes they are fully
stocked with birdbaths. Specialty nurseries are worth a look, too.
Bird Rock Tropicals site is promoting a collection of paphiopedilum orchid
hybrids, check it out!
Club News...
Of course
you've already visited the club website, http://www.socalfungclub.proboards22.com,
right? Please visit again, and again! That's where you'll
find all the latest news, where you can ask questions, and chat about your
favorite garden subjects. In case you missed it, the First
Meeting of the Full Membership of the Southern California FUN
Gardening club will be held on October 18, 2003, at the home of Stella Blue --
Mary, in Yorba Linda. This will include a simple plant exchange, prepare
now! For more information, visit the Calendar of Events section
at the web site.
In
November, the Club is planning a visit to Las Pilitas Nursery in
Escondido. This nursery specializes in native plants, so prepare your
wish list. Tentative dates are November 15th or the 22nd, 2003 at
10:00am, to be followed by a picnic lunch. Details are not yet finalized.
Well, that
wraps it up for this first edition, folks. I look forward to meeting all
of you at some point along the way, and I hope to feature a member interview in
a future edition. I welcome your suggestions for inclusion in the
newsletter. Please feel free to email me at: raddude@cox.net and please mention
SoCalFun Garden Club in the subject line.
